Hugo

Building fast static websites

By Dev | 12 June, 2019

Static instead of functional code

A Content Management System (CMS) such as Wordpress or Drupal allows you to add content online and it will be nicely formated for the web. As with any software it needs to be updated frequently so as to prevent it from being hacked. This updating means extra costs for running the website.

A lot of the websites on the web are plain information giving sites, with not much functionality behind them. These sites could be hosted as static websites.

Over the last couple of years a new breed of open source software has appeared on the scene which allows web developers to rapidly program sites using markdown and templates. One of these is Hugo which is one of the fastest in generating static web pages.

The advantage is that complex sites can be rapidly built and be deployed, all without the overheads of the CMS ecosystem.
